Through the Rabbit Hole
CHAPTER 1
The Farmers’ Plains - a majestic and amazing place. Hidden in the most remote location, there was little civilization and animals are frequent. Animals like the rabbit family.
The rabbits were a big family, consisting of a mom, dad, two aunts, three uncles, seventeen kids, and nine grandparents. It was definitely a lot, especially for the mother, Anna. She was constantly worrying about her family, for she found the food, tended to the youngsters, and helped the elders get along with their day. To add to all this, the dad, Robert, was always just sitting on the log and reading the daily newspaper, crafted from grass. He loved the kids, however, and cherished every moment he had with them.
But this story isn’t about Anna and Robert. It’s about one of the seventeen kids, one named Junior. Junior was the second youngest in the family, just in front of Flora, the baby of the rabbits. Whilst he was only a week old, he learned fast. Junior already knew how to hop, sprint, and easily avoid predators, like the evil foxes that the family despised.
His best friend was none other than Georgia, the nerdiest girl in the entire family. She loved to read, especially books about survival. She loved survival, and she wanted to know everything about it so she could survive for as long as possible in this beautiful world.
One day, Junior and Georgia’s lives changed forever. They would become the heroes of the Farmers’ Plains.
*********************************************************************
It was a warm spring morning, and the rabbit family was sleeping in their burrow. Most of them, at least.
Junior was prowling the house in search of sugar the family always hid from the kids. He loved sugar, and it gave him so much energy he wanted to bound all over the place. He was going to take out his energy in the fields of the Plains, and maybe meet some new friends. However, he had to be quiet.
Junior tiptoed into the dirt kitchen, where he opened a drawer and found a pile of raw sugar. He dipped a finger into it and tasted it. It was delicious.
“Mmm,” he said, “I love -”
There was a sudden noise from behind him. A very loud one indeed.
Junior looked around. Georgia was standing there, watching him eat the sugar.
“Junior, what are you doing?” she asked.
“Umm, nothing, nothing, Georgia!” he said, shoving the drawer and putting his sugar-covered paw behind his back.
“Mom says that we’re supposed to harvest the crops if we wake up early, not eat sugar. By the way, that’s bad for you. Raw sugar can give you diseases.”
“Georgia, I don’t have time for your nerdiness! Just please don’t tell mom, I’ll do anything!”
“If you help me harvest the wheat, then sure.”
“Fine,” Junior groaned, giving in.
So, the two hopped outside and into the fields of the Farmers’ Plains. It was beautiful. The sun was just coming up, so its light painted the sky all sorts of colors - purple, orange, yellow.
There was a patch of wheat just next to the burrow, but there was something odd. There was no wheat stalks.
“Why is there no wheat?” Junior asked.
“Crops don’t just disappear like this,” Georgia said. “Something, or someone, must have taken it all.”
There was an instantaneous buzzing from behind Junior and Georgia. As they slowly turned around, what they saw was terrifying.
A swarm of greenish yellow dots was forming on the horizon, and they were coming toward them. They were coming very fast.
