Welcome to Chapter 2 of A Normal Day! I know it might have tooken a long time making this one because it used past memories from Chapter 1. If you haven't seen Chapter 1, you should! Anyways- I don't want to keep you waiting.. so bye and I'll see you later in Chapter 3!
Chapter 2: School, you tell me what I hate.
“Actually it is not Lyla,” I said. I thought she knew that we still had to go on the bus. I am so thankful right now. “..we still have to go on the bus.” “Um, I meant.. TIME FOR THE BUS!” Lyla yelled again. She spun in a circle. I walked out of the curly- seck with Lyla, and she said to me, “You are no fun! Humph!” I tried not to argue with her, but you know I couldn't resist. “I am ‘fun’! What is the problem of hating school? You just learn all day with homework beside you, telling you that you have to do it or you’ll be in trouble!” I yelled. It seemed like I won, because she was not talking to me now. This is another reason I absolutely hate school.
When we reached the bus stop, I saw my best friend there. She is a bit weird and off to the sides, but she was the only GOOD one I could find in my kindergarten class. What I mean by ‘GOOD one’ is probably confusing to you. My grandpa once said this to me in kindergarten with these exact quotes. “Grace, you must pick a friend in kindergarten that is just right. When you have long friends who stay with you for a long time, that is an amazing friend. So kindergarten is the best time to make friends.”
Anyways, since it IS the first day of 4th grade- I had to greet her. So I did a simple, “Good morning Raina,” Raina was her name, but before I continue, Raina looked weird. “Good morning to you too- it’s great meeting you and your sister!” I forgot my sister was even next to me. She was so quiet. “Yeah, anyways- how's it been doing in your house? Anything bad? Anything good?” I asked her. I may seem so bad but, really- I have to be kind to my ONLY friend. “Yup! I got braces!” Oh- that’s why she looks weird. “They are my favorite color-Purple!” I guess I needed to know that.
Rumble Rumble! Screech! “Oh! There is the bus!” One of Lyla’s friend’s said. I think it was Lyla's friend because she was talking to her. Well, thanks for the update- I totally did not see it. I love being sarcastic.
The doors of the bus opened and Layla became so happy- she hugged me with all her might. I guess she forgave me, or her friend was an evil mastermind and turned my sister into an assistant for me…. oh- I see why my mother once said that I had a strong imagination.
This time she let go of me and ran to the bus, with her feet stepping one by one on the bus stairs to get on. “Oh, I thought the bus would be red! It’s called ‘Red bus’ anyway!” Raina said. I am pretty sure she was joking, but I am not entirely sure. She is a bit weird anyway. “Anyways, Raina lets go before we miss it right in front of our eyes.” I said. I had to make something up to not get distracted. “Okay!” Raina said, nodding.
We hopped on the bus, and I hated the smell of the school bus. It already feels like I am in school. I sat at the back of the bus because I can do that, and I am not a 3rd grader. I waited for Raina to come at the back, but she was trying too hard. I waved my hand to alert her that I am here. She ran over to the back of the bus with me, and she sat in the same seat as me. I scooted over so she had room.
“Why are we here?” Raina asked. “We are not supposed to be here! This is for older kids!” Don’t worry anonymous readers. I got this handled. “We are 4th graders Raina, we are old enough. We don’t have to be 5th graders, ask the principal.” I said. “Okay, I will agree with you, but I will not ask the principal!” I nodded and we had a quiet bus ride to school behind the chatter.
Screech! The bus stopped in the bus loop. I saw Lyla in the corridor of the bus, she was rushing out the bus door. Raina got up and walked sideways to get out of the seat. I got up and did the same thing. We walked out the corridor and one by one- stepped down the stairs.
Me and Raina stepped inside the school. My mother told me I had Mr. Hump for this year when she got the notification on her phone. I walked to my classroom but Raina followed me. Oh-no. She can’t be in the same class as me. I mean, I don’t hate her- it's just embarrassing. “That's right! Surprise! I am in the same class as you!” Raina said to me. “Cool,” I lied. “I am looking forward to it.” I can’t be mean to Raina, I mean- she is my only friend.
Then, Mr. Hump saw us. “Good morning Raina and Grace,” Mr. Hump said. He is a nice, funny guy- well, the rumors said. “There is an ‘All About Me’ sheet on your desk waiting for you. I am planning to hang it in the hallway by next week. Also, don’t forget to find your right seat! There is a surprise waiting for you- it’s a mind blowing surprise!”
My cubby number is 17 so it wasn't so far away from the door to line up. I don’t know what Raina is doing, but I don’t care. I hung my backpack and grabbed my agenda, homework folder, my computer, and my math, social studies, ELA folder and notebooks. I think she did the same. I tried to find my seat, and I saw that the tables were labeled by ‘Pods.’ I found my seat in the best place. The middle, Pod 5. I am officially part of Pod 5. What can I say?
I put my computer and agenda on the table, and the homework folder under my bin to grab my materials. I put all my materials in my bin and saw that there was a ‘Blow bubble pop pow’ (I know, it’s a mouthful) on my desk. Oh- now I get it. ‘Mind blowing.’ Good one. Oh, how I miss those Dad jokes from my OWN dad.
Anyways, I sat in my seat and grabbed a pencil from the ‘All open to use’ bin in the center of my table. On my desk there was the sheet Mr. Hump was talking about. As Mr. Hump said, it was a ‘All about me sheet.’ I put my name, Grace, and my number, 17. I looked at my first- supposed to be ‘fun’ question. It said, ‘What is your name?’ At this point, I am frustrated- I LITERALLY JUST PUT NAME ON IT. I put my name and headed on to the next question. ‘What do you want to be called?/ What nicknames do you have?’ I wrote down a simple answer- ‘Grace.’ Oh, now this is the ‘What is my favorite’ section. I already know I hate this part. Just about when I was going to read the next one, I heard Mr. Hump’s voice. He said the same thing to me, but to a different person. I wonder if he is even tired from talking. I would, I mean, if I were him.
Then I saw Raina. I am pretty sure Raina just noticed me too. Her Pod was one of the most common Pods in fourth grade, I think. She was, of course, Pod 1. Raina waved to me, then whispered, “Doesn't this classroom look awesome?” I looked around. It just looked like a normal classroom, with a Smartboard/Tv, and respectful ways to say I disagree with you or agree with you, a mini library, cubbys, a hydration station, a growth mindset poster, an expectation poster, the teacher desk, and materials. “It looks like a normal classroom, but I guess it's cool.” I replied. “Yeah! That’s why it’s cool!” Raina whispered back.
Riiiiiiing! The school bell rang all of a sudden. “Good morning everybody! Please put your ‘All about me' sheet in your bin and form a circle around our desks.” Mr. Hump said with enthusiasm. Not gonna lie, but that was scary. I got up, put my sheet in my bin and stood next to Raina. I felt like the whole class was waiting on me because everyone was staring and waiting for me… creepy.
Anyways, Mr. Hump said, “That was fast! Well, my name is Mr. Hump. Oh, and I forgot to say, today is the first day of school! Are you excited?” Before a blink of an eye, everyone- except for me yelled, “YES!” Mr. Hump continued talking. “Amazing! Today’s morning we will ask each other's names and greet them. This will be an awesome way to get to know each other. Also, try not to stand to a person you already stood to, we all want to learn each other’s names.” Mr. Hump pointed to a girl next to him. “Good morning Sahanna.” Mr. Hump said. “Good morning Mr. Hump!” This girl named Sahanna said. “Umm, what’s your name?” She asked a boy next to her. “Jackson.” The boy said. “Well, good morning Jackson.” “Good morning Sahanna.” This pattern went on and on and on, until me.
“What is your name?” This girl Betheny asked. “Um- uh- my name is Grace.” I said. “Good morning Grace, nice to meet you.” Betheny said. “Yeah, um- me too. Good morning.” I replied. Then I turned to Raina, she was smiling. “Good morning Raina,” I said. I already know her name so I don’t have to ask. “Good morning Grace.” Raina turned to this boy. Same pattern.
“Well, that's everyone!” Mr. Hump said. “Now you have ELA with your new teacher. She’ll tell you further things about herself, not me.” Mr. Hump looked at the door. “She’ll come in a minute.” He started to grab some math materials and a blue plastic box with binders and papers in it. He also grabbed this gray looking thing that looked like a document camera. “I forgot to tell you, but- me and Ms. Long will be switching roles. For example, in this situation, I will be teaching Math for her class- and she will be teaching ELA for our class- but I’ll be teaching Math and Science with you.” I am not going to lie but Mr. Hump has a confusing schedule with our class.
Mr. Hump left and waved to us. A few minutes later a blonde woman came up to the front of the class. Her hair was curly and she was wearing a long dress with kangaroos and foxes. I looked at my podmates beside me, they were staring at her. Yeah- now I have to live with this creepy class.
“Hello, hello my students! I am Ms. Long!” She looked at a group of people having side conversations. “What is my name to double check, students?” I think she wanted to know if they were listening. “Ms. Long!” everyone shouted. Even the people who weren’t listening. Seems like they like her. She sat down in Mr. Hump’s chair. “Well, today we are going to do something fun! Though some people don’t like ELA much, I am sure they’ll like this!” Suddenly the class became filled with chatter of excited faces.
I hoped you enjoyed and have a great day!
