Burning Water: Stories of the Elements Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Mechanicals

“Well, guys, what’s our team name?” Power asked.

“Good question,” Water replied.

“Hmm…” thought Fire. “How about ‘The Fire Gang’?”

Both Power and Water looked at him questionably. Clearly, Fire concluded, they did not like that name.

“I have an idea!” Water exclaimed. “Let’s call ourselves ‘The Elementals’!”

Power nodded agreement. “Good choice,” he said.

“Aw, I was hoping we could be The Fire Gang,” Fire said sadly.

“Uh, guys, we have more pressing matters than a name right now!” Power exclaimed.

A gang of Mechanicals was driving out of the factory at top speed. They all had angered looks on their weird, gray faces that told The Elementals that a fight was about to ensue.

Water leaped high into the air using her flexible arms. “Hey, my arms are working again!” She smashed down upon one of the Mechanicals, resulting in a blast that flew several others flying.

As the Mechanicals approached Power, Fire started burning through their exoskeletons and melting their “body parts”. They all screamed and writhed as they melted down into puddles of gray goo.

However, Fire and Water could not hold off the creatures by themselves. Power began to punch every single nearby Mechanical in the face, sending them flying into Water, who then used her arms as whips to break the creatures into bits.

The Elementals were doing well, but more and more Mechanicals were flooding out of the factory. There must have been a whole load of them packed up in that room that were ready to spring out and destroy any foes.

Then there were too many. There were Mechanicals driving over The Elementals’ faces, shooting lasers at their feet, and stretching their body parts out so that they looked like bubble gum being chewed up. But suddenly, there was a banging from the factory.

Just as The Elementals were about to give up, hundreds upon thousands of elvish creatures ran out of the building. Clearly fed up with having to construct Mechanicals for all of their lives, they fought back, smacking the creatures with parts of the factory they had ripped apart. There was oil gushing out of the creatures from head to toe, and the elf uprising would make sure it stayed this way.

Water got up to see the elves obliterating all of the Mechanicals. “Elves! You came to help us!” she said.

“Yours very welcomes,” said the elf from earlier as he stomped on one bigger Mechanical. “Yous guys should gets outs of heres whiles yous has the chance!”

“Oh, yes!” Water exclaimed, knowing that the uprising could not hold off the creatures forever.

She shook the other two, telling them, “Guys! Get up! Let’s go while we still can!” As they came to, they realized what was happening and followed Water through the now closing portal.

The Elementals finally realized what time it was when they got back. It was the morning, meaning that they had been fighting Mechanicals for quite some time.

“Well, that was a doozy,” said Power, wiping beads of sweat off of his head.

“Yeah. At least we’re back home now,” replied Fire.

“We’ve still got a mission, though,” Water reminded the other two. “Technology is still out there, and he could be taking souls from innocents right now! We have to warn Ice and find out a way to get to him!”

“Oh no, we can’t tell anyone else about this,” Power advised. “If this ‘Ice’ figures out, she may freak and call the Elemental cops or something.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” Fire asked.

“No. We can’t have any other Elements involved in this,” Power replied. “Technology experimented with the forces of magic back there. Plus, he’s got an army of futuristic minions at his service.”

“Oh,” said Water.

“However, I do know a way we can pinpoint and defeat Technology,” he said. “That’s what we’ll do right now.”
